A mermaid is a mythological creature with a human head and torso and the tail of an aquatic animal such as a fish. Mermaids (or Sirens) are used as a symbol for temptation for their enchanting music and voices. They lived in locations surrounded by cliffs and rocks. The song of the mermaids enchant people and gods, distracting the sailors from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or to shipwreck on the rocky coast. Other stories have them squeezing the life out of drowning men while attempting to rescue them. They are also said to take humans down to their underwater kingdoms.
